| Lee County was established from Monroe County in 1887. It was named for General Robert E. Lee in the American Civil War. From Lee County, Collier and Hendry County were created in 1923. Lee County is the most populous county in Southwest Florida and has many cities and towns. They are Alva, Boca Grande, Bokeelia, Bonita Springs, Captiva, Cape Coral, Estero, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers Shores, Fort Myers Villas, Lehigh Acres, North Fort Myers, Page Park, Pine Island Center, Punta Rassa, Sanibel, San Carlos Park, St. James City, Tice, and Waterway Estates. Among these communities, Fort Myers is the county seat and Cape Coral is the largest city. Lee County is located in Southwest Florida and it borders the Gulf of Mexico, Charlotte Harbor, and Charlotte, Hendry and Collier Counties. Lee County has an area of 1,211.89 square miles with 408.26 square miles of it is water. The average temperature in January is 63.8 degrees F and in August it is around 81.5 degrees F. |
