| Micanopy is a town in Alachua County with a population of 652 as of 2004. Micanopy is another historical spot in Alachua County with various antique stores, a large used books store and a few restaurants. Micanopy was the first distinct US town in Florida. It was the site of a Seminole village called Cuscowilla when explorer and naturalist William Bartram visited in 1774. Micanopy was named after a Seminole Chief and it was built under the patronage of the Florida Association of New York.
In 1983, Micanopy's historic district was listed on National Register of Historic Places. Micanopy has been used in many movies like Cross Creek (1983), Doc Hollywood (1991) and is mentioned in the hit country song "Seminole Wind" by John Anderson. Micanopy has famous residents as residents like renown naturalist and author, Archie Carr, Joaquin and his brother, the late River Phoenix. Every fall Micanopy hosts a large arts festival which brings in a crowd much larger than its population.
