| About Saint Augustine |
| St. Augustine is the county seat of St. Johns County. It is located in a region known as The First Coast. This area extends from Amelia Island to Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Palm Coast. In 2004, the population was estimated at 12,157. St. Augustine is considered to be the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the country. In the late 19th century, St. Augustine became a winter resort for the wealthy since the railroad came to the town. It was led by Henry Flagler, and he went on to develop much of the state's east coast, including the Florida East Coast Railway, which eventually reached Key West in 1912. St. Augustine is a popular tourist attraction for many reasons, including its rich Spanish Colonial Revival Style architectural heritage as well as elite 19th century architecture. The total area for the city is 10.7 square miles, of which 21.99% is water. The St. Augustine Inlet provides access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Matanzas River. There are numerous attractions for everyone including Alligator Farm, Bridge of Lions, Cathedral of St. Augustine, City Gates, Flagler College, Fort Matanzas National Monument, Fountain of Youth, Potter Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum, St. George Street, Zorayda Castle, and so much more. |
