The City of Anna Maria is located on the northern end of Anna Maria Island. It is said that Ponce de Leon named it for the queen of King Charles II. Anna Maria was first discovered by the local Timucan and Caloosan American Indian tribes, and then later by Spanish explorers. Its total area is about one square mile with .2 square miles of it being water. This isn't surprising because Anna Maria is an island.
There are many different water and shore birds and the aquatic life is also significant. Anna Maria is home to many endangered loggerhead turtles which are protected by the island as well as the residents. One may also spot bottlenose dolphins and manatees in the waters. Anna Maria is known for its world class beaches and laid back lifestyle.
