| About Hendry County |
| Hendry County was established from a portion of Lee County in 1923. It received its name for Major Francis Asbury Hendry, an early settler who was also called "the cattle king of South Florida." Hendry County is the Citrus Capital of Florida. It is located east of Fort Myers and south of Lake Okeechobee. It is bordered by many counties such as Glades, Lee, Collier, Broward and Palm Beach. Hendry has an area of 1,153 square miles, in which 28 square miles is water. Cities in Hendry County include Clewiston and La Belle. Unincorporated communities are Port La Belle, Harlem, La Crosse and Felda. Clewiston is Hendry County's most populous incorporated place, followed by La Belle, the county seat. In the southern portion of Hendry county is a large part of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. The average January temperature is 64 degrees F and in August it is usually 81.2 degrees F. |
