Apalachicola is the county seat of Franklin County. Thepopulation was estimated at 2,340 as of 2005. Apalachicola is a combination of Hitchiti Indian words, with one half of the word meaning "on the other side" and the other half meaning "people." It probably meant "people on the other side of the river," though many inhabitants choose to translate it as "land of the friendly people." Apalachicola has a total area of 2.7 square miles, of which 29.32% is water. Apalachicola is part of the Franklin County School District system. |
