About Everglades Neighboring Cities: Naples | Marco Island | Copeland | Ochopee | Chokoloskee | Golden Gate | Goodland | Immokalee | Vanderbilt Beach
Everglades City was called Everglade before 1923. It was a name given by Bembery Storter in 1893 when the U.S. Post Office refused the submission for the name Chokoloskee. He is considered to be the true founder of the town because his family and him owned most of the land around town and were involved in the city's growth, especially when it began to gain visitors and sportsmen. After this, it was Barron Collier who made Everglades City as we know it today. The Everglades is considered to be the gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands as well as one of the nation's mysterious wild places. There are many things to do and see including the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, and Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. The Everglades is valuable to paddlers because there are many paddling routes, and most go through Everglades City to get to the Ten Thousand Islands. |
